L'œuvre en bref
This painting reinterprets Hagia Sophia through the decorative world of Gustav Klimt, a great name of the Vienna Secession. Beneath a blue sky dotted with golden squares, the dome and minarets of Istanbul unfold in a luminous composition with delicate motifs. Fascinated by the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna, Klimt drew from them a major source of inspiration for his famous golden period. Here, this ornamental aesthetic is interpreted with greater softness and restraint, leaving ample room for the architecture of the monument. A harmonious encounter between the Byzantine heritage of Hagia Sophia and the artist’s decorative elegance.
