Claude Monet was a French Impressionist painter who is widely regarded as the most important painter of the Impressionist movement. He is considered the most important painter of the 19th century and one of the founders of modern painting. He was born in Paris in 1840 and died in 1926. During his lifetime, he produced more than 2,000 paintings. He is best known for his series of paintings depicting different aspects of light and weather effects, such as The Poppies, The Magpie and Impression, Rising Sun
Monet's art is characterised by its immediate and sensory appeal. His landscapes, for example, often illustrate the effect of natural light at different times of the day or in different weather conditions. Many of his paintings also feature water lilies, which he painted in different colours to represent different times of the day.
Monet's early works were impressionistic in style, but over time he developed a more realistic painting technique, known as "refined impressionism". His later works are considered to be among the most beautiful and iconic paintings in history.
