Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter, member of the Impressionist group, and an influential figure in the development of Post-Impressionism. His early works show the influence of Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. In his later works, he moved away from the pure naturalism of the Impressionists to a more personal style that often incorporated elements of Symbolism and Neoclassicism.

Caillebotte was born into a wealthy family in Paris in 1848. His father was an architectural engineer and he initially followed in his footsteps by studying at the École des Beaux-Arts. However, he soon abandoned his studies to devote himself fully to painting.

Caillebotte was passionate about boating and was a member of the Paris Sailing Club, which was based in Argenteuil. He was also a naval architect and a regatta sailor who marked his time by participating in races all over France.
