Expressionism is an art movement that emerged in the early 20th century, characterised by the use of bright, sometimes exaggerated colours and abstract forms. The expressionist artist sought to capture emotions and feelings in his or her work, often using distortion and abstraction to express an inner turmoil or a sense of being overwhelmed by the modern world. The movement began in Germany and Scandinavia, but soon spread to other countries, including the United States. Expressionism had a considerable impact on the development of abstract art, and many of its characteristics are still visible in contemporary art.
The paintings of Franz Marc, August Macke, Max Beckmann and Edvard Munch are all characterised by a distinctive use of colour and light. Marc's work is often noted for its bold, vivid hues as in Blue Horse I, while Macke's is characterised by a more subdued palette, which we see in Coloured Forms I. Similarly, Beckmann's paintings are often darker, while Munch's are known for their striking use of light and shadow. Although each artist has a unique approach to colour, all four painters share an ability to create atmospheric and expressive works of art. One of the most famous expressionist paintings is Munch's The Scream.
