L'œuvre en bref
This creation reimagines the Taj Mahal through the art of Hokusai, a great name of ukiyo-e, the art of the Japanese woodblock print that reached its peak during the Edo period. The monument appears at the end of a long pool, framed by gardens and trees with stylised silhouettes. The precise outlines, flat areas of blue and green and graphically shaped clouds recall Hokusai’s landscapes, notably his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The vertical inscription in Japanese characters reinforces the woodblock aesthetic, offering a singular encounter between Indian architecture and the Japanese artistic tradition.
