L'œuvre en bref
This work revisits the Statue of Liberty in the spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a major figure of American Neo-Expressionism. Against a backdrop of New York skyscrapers, the monument appears amid crowns, crossings-out and inscriptions evoking liberty and equality. Influenced by graffiti and urban culture, Basquiat combined writing, symbols and historical references in his works to address questions of identity and society in particular. This creation takes up his raw, expressive pictorial language, offering a contemporary interpretation of one of the greatest symbols of freedom.
