L'œuvre en bref
In The Starfish, Fernand Léger presents a very free composition, built around organic forms and vivid colours. The figures intertwine in a circular motion, as if the bodies were floating or slowly spinning in space. The very bright yellow background highlights the large blue, red and green masses, whilst the thick black outlines structure the whole and guide the eye across the canvas.
This work belongs to Léger’s late period, when his style became more simplified and decorative. He abandoned the complex mechanical forms of his early work in favour of more fluid shapes, inspired by the body, nature and movement. His painting thus became more accessible, more colourful and more monumental, reflecting his desire to create art that was accessible, integrated into modern life and public spaces.
