L'œuvre en bref
In this series of divers, Fernand Léger explores the body in motion and the representation of the human figure in a modern space. The theme of diving allows him to explore collective dynamics without resorting to a naturalistic setting. The figures are not individualised; they become plastic elements organised according to a precise rhythm. The artist is less interested in the sporting action than in the articulation of volumes and colours on the surface of the painting.
The composition is entirely occupied by a tangle of stylised bodies. The silhouettes are simplified into rounded, cut-out shapes, outlined by thick black contours. The colours are bold: red, yellow, blue, green and black. Arms and legs intertwine, creating a compact structure in the centre of the canvas. There is no visible horizon or depth; the light background serves as a neutral support for the flat areas of colour. The overall effect is one of suspended movement, created by the juxtaposition of forms.
