This creation reimagines the Pyramids of Giza through the art of Nicolas de Staël, a major post-war artist whose painting oscillates between figuration and abstraction. The pyramids rise beneath a blue sky, their monumental forms built up in broad flat areas of ochre, beige and deep black. The impasto and palette-knife strokes evoke the texture characteristic of his work, while the luminous contrasts recall his interest in southern light, nurtured in particular by his travels in North Africa. A pared-back canvas in which the geometry of the pyramids meets the expressive power of his painting.
