L'œuvre en bref
This reinterpretation of the Palais des Papes draws on the pictorial world of Paul Cézanne and his Provençal landscapes. Beneath a sky in shades of blue and ochre, the towers of the palace, the arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the green banks of the Rhône are built up in small, juxtaposed dabs of colour. The directional brushstrokes, simplified forms and volumes constructed through colour, typical of Cézanne’s painting, give the landscape a sense of depth and solidity. One of the masters of Post-Impressionism, the artist developed a structured approach to nature that would pave the way for Cubism.
