L'œuvre en bref
This new take on the Millau Viaduct draws on the geometric world of Piet Mondrian. The slender deck, tall piers and cable stays of the bridge cross a composition of red, yellow and blue rectangles bounded by thick black lines. A major figure of Neoplasticism, Mondrian sought to achieve pure abstraction by reducing the forms of reality to primary colours and a balance between vertical and horizontal lines. Here, the diagonals of the viaduct contrast with the rigour of this geometric grid, creating an encounter between contemporary architecture and the artist’s pictorial principles.
