L'œuvre en bref
This transposition of the Cité de Carcassonne draws on Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstraction. On a cream background, the towers and pointed roofs of the fortress are reassembled into triangles, circles and lines of force, in tones of red, yellow, blue and black. The geometric shapes, arcs and discs that cross the composition, characteristic of Kandinsky’s pictorial language, create a visual rhythm close to music, which was so dear to the artist. The profile of the medieval city nevertheless remains recognisable, in a vibrant and resolutely contemporary vision of the Middle Ages.
