L'œuvre en bref
This painting reinterprets the Eiffel Tower in the spirit of Pierre Soulages and his explorations of Outrenoir. The tower emerges from broad black and grey bands, striated and worked with a palette knife, while the Seine and the arches of a bridge extend the composition in dark reflections. Fine glimmers of gold pick out the iron structure against an almost nocturnal background. The impasto, the striations and the handling of the paint, so characteristic of Soulages, turn black into a living surface that catches the light. A sober and powerful vision of Paris, at once abstract and monumental.
