L'œuvre en bref
This painting reinterprets the canals of Amsterdam in the spirit of Johannes Vermeer, master of the Dutch Golden Age. The eye escapes through a half-open window, framed by a blue velvet curtain, a carved chair and a painting hanging on the wall. Outside, the canal reflects the gabled houses, trees and moored barges, while a stone bridge and a bell tower stand out beneath a cloudy sky. The soft light entering the room, the delicate shadows and the meticulous rendering of materials characteristic of Vermeer’s interiors also evoke his View of Delft. A peaceful, silent composition in which a Dutch interior opens onto the city.
