L'œuvre en bref
In The Bundle of Turnips, Fernand Léger combines the human figure with still life in a simple yet highly structured composition. A woman holds a bundle of vegetables in the foreground, surrounded by everyday objects such as a teapot and a table. The forms are drawn with very pronounced black outlines, and the colours are applied in clean blocks, giving the whole a highly graphic appearance, almost like a poster or an illustration.
This work dates from the period when Léger became more interested in scenes of everyday life and simple objects. He sought to depict ordinary subjects—people, objects, plants—in a clear and accessible style. His aim was to create modern yet accessible art, inspired by folk art, advertising, murals and the bold colours of the modern world.
