L'œuvre en bref
In The Grand Parade, Fernand Léger depicts a festive world teeming with characters, acrobats, horsemen and figures inspired by the world of the circus and the performing arts. The composition is dense, constructed like a grand fresco in which characters, objects and machines come together to form a lively and colourful scene. The forms are simplified, outlined in bold black lines, and the primary colours give the whole a joyful and highly graphic appearance.
This work belongs to Léger’s late period, when he sought to create a form of popular art that was accessible and monumental. He was then interested in the themes of the circus, leisure, work and modern life, which he regarded as the new subjects of painting. His style became more accessible and decorative, akin to a mural, based on the idea that art should leave the museums and become part of architecture and everyday life.
