L'œuvre en bref
In The Bridge, Fernand Léger blends landscape and geometric structures into a highly organised composition. At the centre, a checkerboard-patterned bridge spans the scene, whilst vertical columns and architectural forms frame the space. In the background, undulating hills provide a contrast to the rigidity of the geometric forms in the foreground. The whole combines natural elements and man-made structures, creating an image that is both landscape and architecture.
This work clearly demonstrates how Léger transforms reality into simple forms and coloured volumes. The bridge, the buildings and the landscape are not depicted realistically, but simplified into flat surfaces, straight lines and rounded shapes. This approach to constructing the image reflects his quest for a modern pictorial language, inspired by architecture, the city and the structures of the contemporary world.
