A vast red surface fills the background, immediately creating a dense and vibrant atmosphere. In Leisure on a Red Background, Fernand Léger depicts a group of figures gathered around bicycles and familiar objects in a composition that is both stable and lively.

The characters occupy the entire space, arranged frontally. A man in a yellow suit holds a child on his shoulders, while a woman in a striped swimsuit leans on a bicycle. Beside them, other figures, seated, standing or lying down, form a compact group. The bodies are rendered as solid volumes with bold black outlines. The faces are simplified, with regular, almost sculptural features. The bicycles, with their perfectly drawn circular wheels, introduce repeated geometric shapes that give rhythm to the scene.

This work belongs to Léger's so-called ‘classical’ period, when the influence of Cubism was combined with a return to the monumental human figure. The flat areas of bold colours – yellow, blue, green, black and red – are carefully delineated. The space is not deep: it is constructed by superimposing planes. The theme of leisure, a recurring theme in the artist's work, celebrates an accessible and collective modernity, where the body, the object and the machine coexist in an orderly balance.
