L'œuvre en bref
This new take on Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur draws on the world of Vincent van Gogh, who himself lived on the hill. The basilica stands out against a starry sky alive with intense movement. The stepped lanes, bluish rooftops and ochre façades are shaped by thick, rhythmic and expressive brushwork, characteristic of the artist’s painting. The eye climbs the streets and steps up to the white domes of the Sacré-Cœur. The deep blues and luminous yellows do more than depict the landscape: as in Post-Impressionism, colour becomes a true means of expression and heightens the intensity of the scene. A lively painting full of texture, capturing the unique atmosphere of Montmartre.
