L'œuvre en bref
Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur are reimagined here in the world of Paul Gauguin, shaped by his taste for faraway landscapes and a vision deliberately removed from realistic representation. At the top of an orange hill, the white domes of the basilica stand out against a blazing sky, between tall trees with deep foliage, while pink and ochre rooftops tumble down the slope. A pillar of Post-Impressionism, Gauguin developed through Synthetism a style of painting based on large flat areas of colour, strong outlines and simplified perspectives. His search for a more instinctive and symbolic art, linked to primitivism, is expressed here through warm, intense colours that give Montmartre the look of an almost tropical landscape.
