L'œuvre en bref
This transposition of Milan Cathedral draws on the pictorial world of Claude Monet, in particular his famous Rouen Cathedral series. In soft light with shades of pink, blue and pale gold, the Gothic façade is revealed through a multitude of coloured dabs. The soaring spires, sculptures and ornaments of the monument seem to vibrate under the effects of light, while a few figures discreetly animate the square. Through this Impressionist approach, colour conveys the variations of light on the stone, recalling Monet’s explorations of how the same monument is perceived depending on the hour and the atmosphere. A delicate, luminous work in which the architecture blends with the colours of the sky.
