L'œuvre en bref
This reinterpretation of Notre-Dame de Paris directly echoes the Rouen Cathedral series by Claude Monet, in which the artist explores the changing light on the monumental façade at different times of day. Here, Notre-Dame appears bathed in soft morning light. The stone is covered in pearly touches of pale pink and lavender blue, while the outlines gradually dissolve into the mist. From the three portals to the twin towers, the rose window and the galleries reveal themselves in small dabs of colour, suggested rather than drawn. The broken brushstrokes and play of light that define the Impressionist technique make the façade shimmer and transform how the monument is perceived as the atmosphere shifts.
