L'œuvre en bref
This painting reinterprets Machu Picchu in the spirit of Caspar David Friedrich, a great name of German Romanticism. Shrouded in mist, the ancient Inca city appears in the heart of majestic mountains bathed in soft, golden light. This composition recalls Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818), an emblematic work in which the vastness of the landscape invites reflection on humanity’s place in the face of nature. The mystical and spiritual dimension and the quest for the sublime characteristic of Friedrich’s world give Machu Picchu a solemn, contemplative atmosphere here.
