This painting reinterprets Christ the Redeemer through the tropical, colourful world of Paul Gauguin. Overlooking the bay of Rio, the monument rises amid lush vegetation, palm trees and intensely coloured hills. In the foreground, two female figures evoke the compositions the artist created during his stay in Tahiti. The large flat areas of colour, simplified forms and bold contrasts typical of the Synthetism developed by Gauguin transform the Brazilian landscape into an exotic, luminous scene on the border between reality and imagination.
