L'œuvre en bref
In Woman Holding a Vase, Fernand Léger depicts a monumental figure, shown full-face and with a sense of great stability, occupying almost the entire surface of the canvas. The figure is constructed from simple, rounded shapes, with very distinct volumes and thick black outlines. The red vase, held at the centre of the composition, immediately draws the eye and becomes almost as important as the figure itself. The colours are limited but highly contrasting, which reinforces the figure’s solidity and presence.
This type of work corresponds to the period when Léger was interested in the human figure as a monumental, almost architectural form. The figures are not depicted realistically, but simplified into geometric forms, giving them an appearance that is both human and mechanical. He sought to create universal figures—simple and powerful—inspired by classical art, sculpture and the modern world.
