This transposition of the Ponte Vecchio draws on the pictorial world of J. M. W. Turner, a pillar of British Romanticism. Bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, the Florentine bridge appears above the Arno, whose waters reflect the warm hues of the sky. The ochre façades and arches of the bridge gradually melt into a hazy atmosphere. The effects of light, play of transparency and blurred outlines that define Turner’s painting favour emotion and atmospheric sensation over precise architectural detail. A luminous, delicate reading of Florence, in which the landscape seems wrapped in a soft golden haze.
