The Paris Floralies - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In this lavish composition, Raoul Dufy offers a panoramic, festive vision of Paris, combining iconic architecture with floral motifs. It's a stylized, decorative representation in which elements are juxtaposed without concern for scale or perspective.
The Eiffel Tower occupies the center of the image, painted in yellow, orange and blue, topped by a tricolor flag. All around, Parisian monuments are recognizable: the Pantheon, the Sacré-Coeur, the Arc de Triomphe and the Invalides, among others. The buildings are depicted in flat, schematic colors, organized in checkerboards and curves that suggest the topography. In the foreground, a parterre of brightly-toned flowers - pink, red and white - occupies the entire width of the canvas. The pink and blue sky, dotted with rounded clouds, accentuates the joyful, decorative effect of the whole. It's a visual celebration of the city as a colorful garden.
