The Port of Martigues - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
In the first half of the 20th century, Raoul Dufy travelled regularly to the south of France, attracted by the Mediterranean landscapes and the special light of the region. Martigues, nicknamed the ‘Venice of Provence’, became a favourite subject for him, and he tackled it in several works. This painting bears witness to a period that was still close to the influence of Impressionism, before he moved towards a more decorative and synthetic style.
The scene depicts a small, calm port, with boats floating on turquoise water and a village in the background. The sky is crossed by light clouds, painted in visible strokes. The palette is composed of blues, greens and warm earths, applied in thick layers. The composition highlights the water in the centre of the image, bordered by a line of red-roofed houses and a wooded hill. The whole retains a peaceful atmosphere, painted with an eye for natural light.
