L'œuvre en bref
This new take on the Old Port of Marseille draws on the world of Ferdinand Hodler, a major figure of Swiss Symbolism. Beneath a grey-blue sky, the façades of the port, the masts of the boats and the reflections on the water form a landscape of horizontal lines, overlooked by Notre-Dame de la Garde and the bluish mountains on the horizon. The simplified forms, crisp outlines and repeated lines evoke the principle of parallelism developed by Hodler, who sought rhythm and harmony through the repetition of motifs. A serene, almost meditative vision of Marseille, where the balance of the composition invites contemplation.
