L'œuvre en bref
With Still Life with Fruit Bowl, Fernand Léger transforms a traditional subject into a rigorous construction of shapes and colours. The fruit bowl, placed in the centre, is not treated as a simple domestic object: it becomes a structuring volume around which the entire composition is organised.
The green fruits, lined up in the pink bowl, bring an organic presence, but they are simplified into round, smooth masses. Around them, the space is fragmented into vertical and diagonal planes: black bands, white surfaces, a red circle set in a blue shape, juxtaposed geometric segments. Traditional depth disappears in favour of a stacking of clean surfaces. The flat areas are bold, the contours precise, the contrasts strong.
This work is in line with Léger's synthetic cubism, where still life becomes a field for formal experimentation. Objects are isolated, reconstructed and integrated into a stable visual architecture. Everyday life is thus elevated to the rank of plastic structure, balanced by the dialogue between curves, straight lines and coloured volumes.
