L'œuvre en bref
At the centre of the canvas rises an exuberant bouquet of pink roses and jasmine, whose yellow and white flowers spill out in disordered cascades. The Delft vase, recognisable by its characteristic blue and white decoration typical of Dutch faience, supports this teeming composition with a discreet elegance. A few fallen stems and flowers rest on the pale surface that serves as a support, heightening the impression of spontaneity and life. The background, rendered in nuanced grey-green tonalities, brings out the chromatic richness of the bouquet without competing with it.
This still life, painted around 1880-1881, belongs to a floral tradition dear to Auguste Renoir, who considered the genre a precious ground for experimentation. He confided to Ambroise Vollard that painting flowers allowed him to work on values and tonal harmonies without the tension imposed by a living model. The brushwork here is free, vibrant, almost whirling, in the great tradition of Impressionism that Renoir helped found alongside Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. One can also perceive the legacy of the great masters of floral still life, from Jan van Huysum to Henri Fantin-Latour, revisited with the chromatic sensuality and lightness of touch unique to Renoir.
