L'œuvre en bref
A winding path snakes through a sloping meadow, gently climbing the hill toward an open horizon. At the center, a woman sheltered beneath a red parasol walks with a child wearing a yellow straw hat; further up the path, two other figures fade into the light. The foreground is overrun with wild grasses dotted with scarlet poppies and wildflowers, while to the right, a small wooden fence marks the edge of a garden. In the distance, slender trees and a tall poplar stand out against a milky sky.
Painted around 1875, this landscape is among the most poetic works of Auguste Renoir's full Impressionist period. The direct influence of Claude Monet is evident here, particularly in the treatment of the women strolling beneath parasols — a motif both painters explored in parallel. The technique proceeds through small juxtaposed brushstrokes, almost pointillist in places, that make the meadow shimmer with countless shades of green mingled with blues, yellows, and pinks. The bold perspective, a plunging view from the foot of the path, gives the scene an almost immersive quality, inviting the viewer to follow the walkers toward the summit. This lyrical vision of the rural landscape foreshadows certain explorations later developed by Paul Signac and the Post-Impressionist painters.
