L'œuvre en bref
This portrait commissioned by the publisher Georges Charpentier depicts his wife Marguerite, the famous hostess of a Parisian salon, accompanied by her children Georgette and Paul, as well as the family dog. Presented at the Salon of 1879, the work met with immense success and marked a turning point in Auguste Renoir's career, opening the doors of the Parisian high bourgeoisie to him and securing official recognition. This success owed a great deal to the influence of Madame Charpentier, who gathered in her salon writers and artists such as Zola, Flaubert, and Maupassant.
The composition unfolds in a refined interior, where the taste for japonisme, then in vogue, can be discerned: a screen adorned with peacocks, prints on the wall, and bamboo furniture all bear witness to this aesthetic so prized in the cultivated interiors of the period. Madame Charpentier, draped in a black gown by Worth, occupies the right side of the canvas with an imposing presence. Beside her, her two children, dressed in identical pale blue gowns according to the fashion of the time which dressed young boys like girls, sit on a large, placid Newfoundland dog. Renoir uses a free, shimmering touch, particularly visible in the flowered fabric of the sofa and the bouquet in the background, while preserving a more restrained precision for the faces. The chromatic harmony, dominated by deep blacks, soft blues, and the gilded tones of the décor, perfectly illustrates the mastery of Impressionism applied to society portraiture.
