L'œuvre en bref
The Reader depicts Henriette Henriot, a young actress and Auguste Renoir's favorite model at the time, who posed for several of his significant works. The motif of reading, particularly prized in the nineteenth century, conveys a certain modernity: the growing access of women to written culture, the press, and popular novels. This intimate theme was widely explored by the Impressionist painters and those close to them, notably Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, and Édouard Manet, who saw in it an opportunity to capture a moment of feminine quietude far from the conventions of official portraiture.
The young woman is captured up close, slightly in three-quarter view, her face inclined toward her book in an attitude of total absorption. Her blonde hair, gathered in a loose chignon with stray wisps, catches a golden light that seems to emanate from the book itself. Renoir uses a striking effect here: the reflection of the pages lights up the reader's face from below, creating an inverted play of light that is almost Caravaggesque. The brushwork is extraordinarily free, almost impasto, with quick and energetic strokes that sculpt the hair and give the skin that luminous freshness characteristic of the painter. Warm tones dominate, ranging from golden ochres to flamboyant reds, contrasting with the deep brown of the garment and the background. This coppery palette and this material intensity recall the influence of the Flemish and Venetian masters, particularly Rubens, whose chromatic sensuality Renoir greatly admired.
