Orphan Girl at the Cemetery - Eugène Delacroix

This poignant work by Eugene Delacroix in 1824 is considered a preparatory study for the "Massacres of Scio" and evokes a deep sadness. The outlines are drawn with great precision and highlight the young girl against the blurred background of the sky and the desolate cemetery. Tears are beading at the edge of her eyes, her mouth is half-open, her shoulder bare, she seems doomed.

The artist

Eugène Delacroix is a French painter of the nineteenth century. Considered as the main representative of Romanticism, his reputation allows him at forty years to receive important orders from the state. He decorated the walls and ceilings of many public monuments. All his life he strove to draw a most laudatory portrait of the greatness of the human being. Admired by his peers, van Gogh, Cézanne and Degas, he greatly influenced the Impressionist movement.
