The "Oath of the Horatii" is a work commissioned by Louis XVI. The painting depicts the Horatii brothers swearing an oath to their father to defeat or die in defense of Rome against the Curiatii. Jacques-Louis David imagined this oath after the stories of the battle, present in several legendary accounts of ancient Rome, with the idea of representing the notion of patriotism.
