L'œuvre en bref
This painting reinterprets Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster in the spirit of Paul Signac, a major figure of Neo-Impressionism, whose painting is based on the juxtaposition of small dabs of pure colour. In the golden light of the setting sun, the clock tower and the silhouette of Parliament stand out against a sky in shades of blue, yellow and orange. The coloured dabs typical of the Divisionist technique echo one another in the sky and in the reflections on the Thames, creating effects of light and contrast. This approach recalls Signac’s explorations of colour harmonies and the breaking down of light.
