The Parc des Princes reflects Nicolas de Staël’s interest in sporting scenes, which he approached without seeking anecdotal description. Football becomes here a structuring motif rather than a narrative subject. The artist aims to convey the intensity of a match through the organization of color masses and the relationship between vertical and horizontal elements. The field, the stands, and the players are reduced to essential forms, arranged in a way that suggests collective movement and the tension of the game.

The surface is constructed from broad green planes occupying the lower section, evoking the pitch. Above, light, blue, black, and gray blocks interlock irregularly. Vertical green and white bands cross the composition, while darker rectangles structure the right side. The contours are defined, sometimes incised, and the paint is thickly applied with a palette knife. Human figures are not individualized; they appear as colored volumes integrated into the architectural structure of the stadium.
