L'œuvre en bref
In this work, Fernand Léger reduces painting to an interplay of geometric shapes and simple volumes arranged with great precision. A large brown circle structures the canvas, around which vertical bars, arcs and rectangles in subdued colours—black, white, grey and brown—are arranged. The whole gives the impression of a mechanical or architectural construction, like an assembly of industrial parts arranged with precision.
This period marks an important phase in Léger’s work, during which he developed a highly structured language, close to abstraction, yet always inspired by objects and machines. He does not seek to represent an identifiable subject, but rather to organise space using solid forms, contrasts and visual rhythms. His painting thus becomes almost architectural, based on balance, structure and the relationship between volumes.
