L'œuvre en bref
In The Médrano Circus, Fernand Léger captures the energy of the show by translating it into an orchestration of circular shapes and articulated volumes. The circus performers appear fragmented, integrated into a set of colourful discs, arcs and mechanical structures. The colours – yellow, blue, green, red – are intertwined in a dense composition, punctuated by sharp contrasts and powerful lines.
Created in the early 1910s, the work belongs to Léger's Cubist period. Fascinated by modernity and the world of the circus, which he frequented assiduously in Paris, the artist does not describe the scene in a narrative manner. He constructs a dynamic space where figures, machines and scenery merge into a compact visual architecture, revealing his interest in movement and urban vitality.
