L'œuvre en bref
In this painting, Fernand Léger depicts an urban landscape composed of buildings, staircases, signs, metal structures and fragments of human figures. The composition is constructed as an assemblage of coloured geometric shapes that overlap and intertwine, giving the impression of a modern city in motion. The contrasts between the coloured surfaces, the black shapes and the lighter areas create a visual rhythm reminiscent of traffic, architecture and urban life.
This work illustrates Léger’s interest in modernity, the city and industrialisation at the beginning of the 20th century. Unlike the Cubists, who primarily fragmented objects, Léger drew greater inspiration from machines, construction sites and modern architecture. He sought to interpret the contemporary world using a language of simple volumes, bold colours and solid structures, in order to represent the city as a symbol of modern life and progress.
