Still life - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Painted in 1951, this still life was commissioned by Frida Kahlo for Samuel Fastlicht, a dentist and friend of the Kahlo-Rivera couple. At this point in her life, Frida was weak and often bedridden, and painted smaller works, often colourful still lifes full of symbolic elements linked to Mexican culture. Here, she combines humour, vitality and patriotism.
At the centre of the composition is a small black xoloitzcuintle dog, emblematic of Mexico, surrounded by tropical fruit (watermelon, lemon, papaya, melon, orange). A lemon is balanced on its head. In the background is a Mexican flag and a handwritten banner in which Frida dedicates the work to Samuel Fastlicht. The deep blue background and the bright colours of the fruit highlight the round shapes and shiny texture. This still life is more than a decorative representation: it is a declaration of affection, culture and resilience.
