Roots - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
In this painting, Frida Kahlo is lying semi-recumbent on a cracked, barren floor. Her body rests on a white sheet, and she is wearing a bright red dress. Thick roots protrude from her open abdomen, spreading out around her and sinking into the ground, as if she herself were a plant nourishing the earth. Its expression is fixed and turned towards the viewer, calm but still.
The contrast between the parched ground and the roots full of life suggests a reflection on suffering, fertility and the interdependence between the body and the earth. The painting evokes both a need to be anchored and the pain associated with immobility or an imposed condition, probably in connection with the many operations Kahlo underwent.
