Regattas in Cowes - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
Painted in the mid-20th century, this painting is one of many nautical scenes created by Raoul Dufy, who was fascinated by the world of regattas and harbors. Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, is an iconic venue for international yacht racing, and Dufy found it an ideal subject to blend movement, color and maritime scenery in a vibrant composition.
The image shows a multitude of sailboats at sea, surrounded by pennants and flags flying from tall masts. The whole is bathed in a dominant shade of intense blue, enhanced by touches of yellow, red, white and green. Shapes are stylized, boats barely sketched, details deliberately simplified. Brushstrokes are broad, visible and spontaneously applied. The surface of the painting is treated as a decorative motif, with no real depth, where visual agitation translates the festive animation of a large maritime gathering. The main subject is the sea as a scene of visual celebration.
