Open window - Raoul Dufy
Excellent
The artwork in a nutshell
This painting is part of a series of interiors painted by Raoul Dufy during his stays on the Côte d'Azur. The window becomes a central motif in his work, linking the intimate space of the room to the Mediterranean landscape. The subject doesn't seek to render a realistic scene, but to juxtapose colors, textures and perspectives in a decorative construction.
The composition revolves around a window overlooking the sea, with a view of the city of Nice in the distance. The interior is richly furnished: patterned red armchairs, blue and red carpets, mirrors, moldings. The colors are bold - deep blue, bright red, dark green - and the shapes are framed in black. Space is compressed, proportions deliberately altered. The whole is treated as a set of colored surfaces, where the balance between interior and landscape creates the structure of the painting.
