Fruit of life - Frida Kahlo
Excellent
L'œuvre en bref
Fruit of Life is one of Frida Kahlo's last works, painted in 1953, shortly before her death. Seemingly joyful and colourful, this still life combines elements linked to life, death and spirituality. The work can be interpreted as a pictorial testament: a celebration of fertility and the Mexican earth, but also an evocation of the imminent end.
The composition is dominated by an abundance of tropical fruit: sliced watermelons, bananas, oranges and pomegranates. A white dove in the centre evokes peace or the soul, while a red thread, reminiscent of veins or blood, runs through the entire scene. Two stars, a smiling sun on the left and a more neutral one on the right, seem to frame the scene, suggesting the passage from day to night, or from life to death. Despite the apparent richness of nature, there is a vital and spiritual tension running through the canvas that goes beyond the simple representation of objects.
