Fort Vimieux - William Turner

Fort Vimieux is a bold composition by William Turner in which a fiery sunset sits just to the right of a grounded three-master. The overall tone of the sky matches that of the sandy beach and the clouds have no competition for the glowing sun. What makes the work fascinating is this muted sky despite the red of a vibrant sunset.

The artist

The life of Joseph Mallord William Turner, "the painter of light", was characterized by a complete devotion to his art. Of a rugged and robust temperament, he was an insatiable traveler who tirelessly traveled, mostly alone, throughout Europe, particularly in Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland. Everywhere, in the manner of a reporter, he drew or reproduced landscapes, sites and monuments in watercolors. At his death, he bequeathed more than 20,000 works on paper to the British government.
