At the beginning of the 20th century, the Czech-born Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha created four portraits of women inspired by gems: emerald, topaz, ruby and finally amethyst. The latter is symbolised here by gigantic irises and by the purple fabric draped over the model's legs.
